FC Barcelona are set to play Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur in their season opener.
FC Barcelona will take on Premier
One of the program's regular contributors, Laia Tudel Prades, revealed the news during a Monday evening broadcast.
Tudel Prades explained that the two teams will meet on August 9 in the annual Joan Gamper trophy match that is traditionally regarded as marking the opening of a new season.
Barca have returned to training on Monday, and next week will see them head to the United States for a preseason tour that will take in matches against Juventus, Arsenal, Real Madrid and AC Milan from the July 22 to August 1.
After around a week's rest in terms of not playing matches, Barca will then host 2019 Champions League finalists Spurs in the Joan Gamper.
Past editions of the friendly have taken place at Camp Nou, but as the iconic ground is unavailable because it is currently being renovated, Barca will play their games at the Montjuic Stadium next term.
In mid-April, AS reported that the Blaugrana were looking into moving the match temporarily to Basel in Joan Gamper's birthland Switzerland.
Reasons for this were reported as being economic above all, as Barca could stand to make a much-needed €1.5 million ($1.65 million), but preparing Montjuic for the 2023/2024 campaign Barca will start as defending La Liga champions is also a factor.
Barca asked La Liga to play the first few games of the upcoming season on the road, which is a call that has been partly-heeded.
Barca start away at Getafe on August 13, then host Cadiz on the 20th before visiting Villarreal on the 27th and Osasuna September 3 on the cusp of a two-week international break.
Tudel Prades reports that Barca will play Spurs at Montjuic after all, however, in what will be an interesting test for Xavi's men if both teams field strong sides.
Last year, Barca thumped Mexico's Pumas UNAM 6-0 and barely came out of first gear.
In Tottenham, though, Barca could face a stern challenge from a Premier League outfit which could prove key to their hopes of going at least one better than back-to-back group exits from the Champions League over the past two seasons.
The Catalans and north Londoners haven't met since the 2018/2019 season when they shared a group in the mentioned elite European competition.
Barca first beat Spurs 4-2 at Wembley while the English club's new stadium was being built, then they drew 1-1 at Camp Nou as both sides advanced to the knockout stages.
By the time the final came round the following year, however, it was Spurs that had gotten through to the decider in Madrid where they were beaten by Barca's semi-final foes Liverpool.
Another interesting feature of the upcoming edition of the Joan Gamper is that it will be played midweek and not at the weekend as is usually common.
This year, Barca will complete the match and then have just two full days to prepare for Getafe in the league.
