FC Barcelona are economically worse off than they were two-and-a-half years ago on the watch of current leader Joan Laporta, according to ex-presidential candidate Victor Font.
Font was beaten at the polls by Laporta in a March 2021 election, with the club "technically bankrupt" at the time as later declared by ex-CEO Ferran Reverter.
According to Font, though, despite Laporta's claims to the contrary that he has turned things round and saved the club "from financial ruin", Barca are in poorer shape then when predecessor Josep Bartomeu left them starting into the abyss.
"We are worse off than we were two-and-a-half years ago," Font stated at a press event on Thursday.
"If there were elections tomorrow, Laporta's economic legacy would be worse than Bartomeu's. We have wasted a lot of time and we have more expenses, more losses, less equity, and more debt.
"The context, with €1 billion ($1.08 billion) in losses in ordinary business in two and a half years, is very worrying. And the forecasts for the next two years, with the move to Montjuic (from Camp Nou), are not especially optimistic," Font added. "We are not doing our homework to make Barca sustainable."
Font also blasted rival Laporta for his "absence of transparency". "The Spotify deal, strategic for the club, is a perfect example. Also the issue of season ticket prices for next season and the award of the reform works of Camp Nou to Limak.
"They tell us that it is the company that makes it faster and cheaper. Are these the criteria we prioritize when building what should be our house for decades to come?" Font posed.
Remarking that members risk losing governance of the club each passing day as Laporta doesn't intend to maintain the current ownership model in his view, Font also stressed that letting Lionel Messi walk on a free transfer in 2021 and not making a second stint happen this summer is a "mistake that will mark Laporta's term".
"That Leo did not renew two years ago and now has not returned is a leadership problem and the biggest mistake you can make.
"I had lunch with Xavi several weeks ago and he was very excited about his possible arrival. We are not aware of the opportunities we have missed. We could have capitalized, for example, [on] his World Cup [win] with Argentina," Font lamented.
