After more than half a century playing his hit songs to massive crowds, Elton John's touring career has officially come to an end. It's always a bit sad whenever someone of his stature concludes a chapter, but the piano player and singer has wrapped this part of his life by making history and hitting highs no one has ever reached.
On Saturday, July 8, John played what he's calling his final concert as part of a tour, wrapping up his extensive Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour. According to Billboard, the superstar's final run of concerts earned a staggering $939.1 million in grosses. John reportedly sold six million tickets to his shows, making it a massive success across all fronts.
Not long ago, John's Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour made history as the first trek to reach $900 million in ticket sales. Before that, it also became the first to make it to $800 million in sales. Currently, no one is giving him a run for his money—all $939 million of it. The second-highest-grossing tour of all time remains Ed Sheeran's ÷ (Divide) Tour, which earned $776 million between 2017 and 2019.
The Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour is not just the highest-grossing trek of all time; it's also one of the longest and most intensive. The run ends after almost five years, with John beginning the venture back in September 2018. He played consistently until the Covid-19 pandemic stopped him in his tracks, and then he picked the tour back up when it was safe to do so, and he's been playing ever since.
While John may be done touring, he is not retiring, as he is is still working on new material for many purposes. He regularly releases albums and singles, including one last summer with Britney Spears, which became a top 10 hit worldwide. Additionally, he recently won another Academy Award for contributing a song to his own biopic. On top of all that, he's working on a musical as well, keeping his creative juices flowing.
Although John may never tour again, he could certainly perform live in one-off instances, providing fans with more chances to see him, even if they missed out on The Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour. For the moment, John's record is safe, but Taylor Swift will likely eclipse his impressive sum by the time her The Eras Tour ends next summer. The pop superstar's current trek is expected to become the first to surpass $1 billion in ticket sales.
