The lawsuit alleges a new California law violates the company’s First Amendment rights because “it compels companies like X Corp. to engage in speech against their will” and “interferes with the constitutionally-protected editorial judgments” of the company.
It says it does so by “pressuring companies such as X Corp. to remove, demonetize, or deprioritize constitutionally-protected speech that the State deems undesirable or harmful,” and “places an unjustified and undue burden” on social media companies like X.
AB 587 was signed into law in September of last year and requires websites and online services that collect personally identifiable information about California users to make its privacy policy publicly available.
The lawsuit was filed Friday in Sacramento federal court.
