


A 4.8 magnitude earthquake was reported in the northeastern U.S. on Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, briefly shaking New Jersey, New York City, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.
The earthquake’s epicenter was located about 7 kilometers north to northeast of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, which is roughly 40 miles west of New York City, according to the USGS.
Shakes were reported across New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and western Massachusetts, with some sporadic reports as far north as Maine and as far south as Virginia, USGS said.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro both said they were monitoring the situation for possible damage, while New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said the state opened its emergency operations center.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams is being briefed on the situation, though there were no reports of major impacts, his office said.
