Dune: Part Two” could have the highest-grossing opening weekend of the year when it arrives in theaters Friday, with a projected $170 million worldwide opening, according to Deadline.

The second installation of the Frank Herbert novel could gross $170 million this weekend through $80 million in U.S. and Canada theaters and another $85 million to $90 elsewhere globally, Deadline reported Tuesday.

Warner Bros. is projecting the film will open to $65 million in the U.S. and Canada, according to Deadline.

If predictions about its domestic success are correct, “Dune: Part Two” could be the first movie to gross more than $50 million in its opening weekend since the October premiere of “Five Nights at Freddy’s.”

“Dune Part Two” will be released in more than 4,000 theaters across the country Friday, according to Deadline. The premiere comes five months after the film was originally scheduled to be released but was delayed because of monthslong actors and writers strikes last year.

The first “Dune” movie grossed $41 million during its opening weekend, according to Box Office Mojo. The movie went on to record more than $430 million globally in box office sales. Because of its 2021 release date, “Dune” also appeared on HBO Max.

“Dune: Part Two” comes nearly three years after the first film was released. The second installation stars Zendaya, Timothée Chalamet, Austin Butler and Florence Pugh. “Dune: Part Two” has a 97% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
