Invincible
While Invincible season 2 finally got a release date, November 3, that was joined by the announcement that it would only be four episodes, and the second half would not be arriving untill 2024, disappointing some viewers.
But, also announced during at the same time, which many people seem to have missed, was the instant release of an entirely new episode of the show, a special one-off about Atom Eve specifically. While I’m calling it season 2 episode 0, it’s probably more like season 0 episode 1. It is not a bridge between season 1 and season 2, it is the entire origin story of Atom Eve, which takes place before the events of season 1, obviously. But it is our first new episode in 2.5 years.
It is also really, really good.
Atom Eve, voiced by Gillian Jacobs as an adult, has been a fixture on the main show given her relationship with Mark, but here we can see her origins, how she got her powers and what she had to go through the escape a government trying to capture her and use her as a superweapon. Additionally, it’s a look into her home life with her adopted family, which explains why she may look outward for that kind of connection.
Invincible
However, the best part of the episode is a singular action sequence which involved the most creative use of superpowers I think I’ve ever seen. Not just in animation, but maybe live action as well. While we know Atom Eve can manipulate matter, the way that’s employed during these sequence is incredibly creative, as are the powers of the enemy she’s fighting. It’s a thrilling sequence that takes place on a busy freeway that most closely resembles perhaps a Green Lantern fight, if Green Lantern was pink and didn’t make as many goofy things with his powers. Just a phenomenal sequence.
The entire episode is full-length, 50 minutes long or so. While centered on Atom Eve, there are plenty of cameos from other series characters. Yes, even Omni-Man appears, though in a minor capacity.
I just wouldn’t want Invincible fans to miss this, as it was announced and released practically instantly, and while I heard it was happening, I didn’t realize it was already out. So go check it out on Amazon Prime right now.
