Trump was selected as “Person of the Year” for “marshaling a comeback of historic proportions” that featured his “driving a once-in-a-generational political realignment” and his “reshaping the American presidency and altering America’s role in the world,” Time announced.
Trump beat out a shortlist that included Vice President Kamala Harris, Kate Middleton the Princess of Wales, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, billionaire Elon Musk and podcast host Joe Rogan.
In an interview with Time, Trump said he would pardon rioters who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, on a “case-by-case” basis as one of his first acts of president, saying he would do so within “maybe the first nine minutes.”
Time noted that, after Trump’s first presidency, the president-elect had “[provoked] the violent attack” on the Capitol after losing the 2020 presidential election.
