The indictment of Teixeira, 21, comes two months after his arrest for allegedly taking the documents and posting them online.
“The unauthorized removal, retention and transmission of classified information jeopardizes our nation’s security,” U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts Joshua S. Levy said in a statement, adding people granted access to classified materials have a duty to safeguard them.
Attorney General Merrick Garland said in the indictment that Teixeira was “entrusted by the United States government with access to classified national defense information” that could “cause exceptionally grave damage to national security if shared.”
