Diogo Dalot has signed a new contract at Manchester United until the summer of 2028, with the club retaining the option of adding another year.

The 24-year-old Portuguese international arrived at Old Trafford in 2018 and has since made a total of 107 appearances in all competitions.

“Playing for Manchester United is one of the highest honours that you can have in football,” he said. “We have shared some fantastic moments over the past 5 years, and I’ve grown so much and my passion for this incredible club has only increased since the day that I joined.”

“As a group of players, we all feel like we are at the start of a special journey right now. I can assure you that I will dedicate myself relentlessly to helping this group to achieve our aims and make the fans proud of this team.”

“That drive continues this week with everyone intensely focused on preparations for the FA Cup final.”

Dalot has had a season of mixed fortunes; he enjoyed a period of impressive form and started 20 consecutive games for United before the World Cup last year, but sustained an injury in Qatar which saw him ruled out for two months.

This allowed his rival Aaron Wan-Bissaka back into the team and his significant revival in form ultimately saw Dalot’s playing time curtailed in the second half of the season.

It is likely Dalot will have to be content with a place on the bench for the FA Cup final against Manchester City on Saturday, with Wan-Bissaka set to be named in the starting line-up.

Even so the United manager Erik ten Hag has been impressed with what Dalot offers his squad and was keen that he committed his future to Old Trafford.

The Dutchman appreciates Dalot’s versatility, which has allowed him to play him at left-back for several games this season.

There had been an expectation United would enter the transfer market for a new right-back this summer, but that appears less likely now.

“Diogo is an excellent defender, with a great combination of pace, strength and versatility,” United’s football director John Murtough said. “He has consistently developed, improving year-on-year since joining the club.”

“Diogo’s work ethic and professionalism is superb; the way in which he prepares himself every day in order to perform at his highest level is exactly what we all want from a Manchester United player.”

“Diogo has a strong mentality, high standards and a great personality, and we are delighted that he will remain an important member of the squad for the coming years.”
