Bayern Munich has won their 11th Bundesliga title in the most dramatic fashion. The German record champions beat 1. FC Köln 2-1 thanks to a late Jamal Musiala goal, while Dortmund at the same time could not beat Mainz, drawing their game 2-2. That left Bayern at the top of the table, thanks to a better goal differential.

It is the narrowest of the 11 Bundesliga titles Bayern has won in a row. And in reality, Dortmund can only blame themselves for throwing away the biggest chance in years to finally crown a different Bundesliga title winner.

Other than Thomas Müller, who still seemed to believe last week that the title was possible, the entire club seemed to have given up on celebrating yet again on the Marienplatz. In fact, their performance against Köln was not entirely convincing either, and it took an unbelievable goal by Musiala to win it for Bayern late.

It might have been a more fitting ending if both clubs had crawled across the line. Dortmund won it, with Bayern dropping points yet again. Already we had the lowest point total for a title winner since Bayern won it under Louis van Gaal in 2010.

It is, therefore, not a massive surprise that while the Bayern players were celebrating, that news made the rounds that the supervisory board had decided to relieve both CEO Oliver Kahn and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic from their duties. The two were very much behind the decision to fire head coach Julian Nagelsmann mid-season, at a point when the club was still in the Champions League, the DFB Pokal, and at a good place in the Bundesliga.

“The decision to part ways with Oliver Kahn was anything but easy for the supervisory board,” Bayern President Herbert Heiner said in a statement released by the club. “Nevertheless, due to the overall development, we have decided to make a new appointment at the top of the executive board."

Thomas Tuchel came in, and Bayern gambled away the Pokal, the Champions League, and the club was also well on its way to throwing away the Bundesliga title too. That Bayern won the title is very much due to Dortmund not getting the job done, and the bosses at the Säbener Straße are very much aware of that fact.

In many ways, that is a fitting end to a tumultuous Bayern season. Despite winning the title, the Rekordmeister still managed to have off-the-field stories dominate the headlines.

“Is this coming now?,” Müller said minutes after the final whistle. “A minute after the final whistle? I didn't know anything about it until now."

That quote says it all, rather than celebrating the title, the Bayern players were confronted with off-field news that will very much determine their respective futures. And there will be a few players that will have to make decisions. Those players include Jamal Musiala and Alphonso Davies, who are in the middle of contract negotiations, and whether this will impact their decision to stay or not remains to be seen.

But then there is also Dortmund. How will the eternal second-placed team come back from yet another massive disappointment? Perhaps the Black and Yellows can learn a bit about Bayern’s ruthlessness. Dortmund came close, but it was not good enough, and maybe another way needs to be found to dethrone Bayern from the top of the Bundesliga.
