In a statement issued by the Pentagon, Press Secretary Major General Pat Ryder said Austin was “transported by his security detail” to the hospital and he transferred the “functions and duties” of his office to Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks.
Ryder added: “The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the White House, and Congress have been notified.”
Later on Sunday night, Walter Reed officials issued a statement saying Austin was “admitted into the critical care unit” at the hospital after a series of tests “for supportive care and close monitoring.”
The Walter Reed officials said the expected duration of Austin’s hospital stay was still unclear.
Walter Reed officials said: “The current bladder issue is not expected to change his anticipated full recovery. His cancer prognosis remains excellent.”
This is a developing story.
