At least 315 people were killed and over 1,600 were injured after a series of deadly flash floods struck Afghanistan’s northern Baghlan Province, Reuters reported, citing the country’s Taliban-controlled refugee agency.

At least 51 of the casualties were children, UNICEF confirmed Sunday, after heavy rains destroyed an estimated 3,000 houses in Baghlan Province, as well as 300 in neighboring Takhar Province and Badakhshan Province.

In Indonesia, torrential rain, a cold lava flow from the erupting volcano Mount Merapi and devastating mudslides caused a river to overflow its banks, flooding villages on the island of Sumatra on Saturday and Sunday.

Thirty-seven people were killed and more than a dozen were reported missing, the Associated Press reported, citing Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency.

In South America, deadly floods continued to devastate Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul state, where the death toll rose to 143 on Sunday, the Brazilian state’s government said.

The flooding in Brazil, which began on April 29, has displaced more than 500,000 people in the southern state across 446 municipalities, and 81,285 residents are living in shelters.

One of the most devastating floods began on April 29 after a storm system brought torrential rains to South America, including southern Brazil and the nation’s border with Uruguay. Hundreds of towns and cities were flooded, including Rio Grande do Sul’s capital of Porto Alegre. Two weeks later, the death toll continues to rise as the nation struggles to distribute aid and repair flooded neighborhoods. On May 2, the 14 de Julho hydroelectric dam collapsed on the Taquari River, further exacerbating the flood conditions in the region and leaving thousands without power.
