Just over a week after firing vice president Kenny Williams and general manager Rick Hahn, the Chicago White Sox announced one of their replacements.

On Thursday, Chris Getz was named the next general manager of the White Sox.

He spent seven years in the White Sox organization, serving in the operations department and, for the last three years, as the assistant general manager. Prior to that, the 40-year-old Getz worked as a baseball operations assistant in the Royals organization.

“Chris brings a wealth of knowledge and experience within our organization to this role,” said White Sox chairman Jerry Reinsdorf in a press release. “Most importantly, he knows our players, both at the major league level and in our system, knows our staff and is familiar with all aspects of our baseball operations department.”

Before working as the assistant general manager, Getz spent several years as the director of player development, overseeing the White Sox minor league system during the 2017-2020 seasons.

“I am honored and humbled to be given this leadership responsibility,” Getz said in a press release. “I understand what this team means to White Sox fans, and I am excited to begin the work today and during the remainder of this season. There is a great deal of talent within this clubhouse and within this ballpark, and we are going to diligently begin to do the work and lay the foundation for an organization and a team we all take pride in, from the staff, to the players, to our fans.”

Williams and Hahn were fired on August 22. The White Sox made the postseason in 2020 and 2021, but won just one playoff game across both seasons. Last year, they finished a disappointing 81-81, and this season has been much worse. The White Sox have 81 losses on the last day of August, with nearly 30 games left to play.

The team was active at the trade deadline, shipping out starting pitchers Lucas Giolito and Lance Lynn along with relievers Kendall Graveman, Reynaldo Lopez, and Joe Kelly. Infielder Jake Burger was also traded.

Going forward, Getz will have the responsibility of guiding the organization through another rebuild of sorts. There is still a great deal of talent on the roster, so his approach to the upcoming offseason could help the White Sox avoid a prolonged retooling.

“Chris has impressed me greatly over the past seven years,” Reinsdorf said. “In our conversations together this season, I have become energized by his vision, approach and sense of what this organization needs to become competitive again. With his existing knowledge of the organization, top to bottom, I believe his leadership will provide us with the quickest path forward to our goal, a consistently successful baseball team that competes and plays the game the right way. He will re-energize this organization.”

Getz was drafted by the White Sox in the 2002 and 2005 amateur drafts, and he played with the team in parts of the 2008 and 2009 seasons before spending the bulk of his career with the Royals. He joined the Kansas City front office after retiring in 2014 and was a part of the organization when they won the World Series in 2015.
