Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk was fatally shot Wednesday during an event at Utah Valley University, drawing bipartisan condemnations from lawmakers, President Donald Trump and public figures as the “subject” has been detained by law enforcement.
Trump: The president, who ordered all American flags at half mast until Sunday, said nobody “understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than” Kirk, extending his sympathies to Kirk’s wife, Erika, who has two children.
Former President Barack Obama: The former president said “We don’t yet know what motivated the person who shot and killed Charlie Kirk, but this kind of despicable violence has no place in our democracy,” adding he and former First Lady Michelle Obama would pray for Kirk’s family.
Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu: “I spoke to him only two weeks ago and invited him to Israel,” Netanyahu wrote in a tweet, saying Kirk was “murdered for speaking truth and defending freedom” and calling him a “lion-hearted friend of Israel.”
Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.: “Once again, a bullet has silenced the most eloquent truth teller of an era,” Kennedy, son of Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of former President John F. Kennedy, both of whom were assassinated, wrote on X. “My dear friend Charlie Kirk was our country's relentless and courageous crusader for free speech.”
Gov. Spencer J. Cox, R-Utah: Cox said he spoke with Trump and that the FBI and Utah law enforcement “will bring to justice the individual responsible for this tragedy.”
House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La.: Johnson called Kirk a “close friend and confidant,” calling for political leaders to “loudly and clearly decry this violence.”
Sen. Mike Crapo, R-Idaho: Crapo called Kirk’s death a “vile and reprehensible act of political violence,” saying it is a deep loss to the conservative movement.
Sen. John Hickenlooper, D-Colo.: The former Colorado governor condemned political violence, saying it has “zero place” in the U.S. and adding, “Our thoughts are with Charlie Kirk’s family.”
Ben Shapiro: Shapiro, a fellow conservative political commentator, said he was “utterly stunned and heartbroken and sick to my soul,” adding, “we must pick up the baton where Charlie left it, fighting for the things he believed in so passionately.”
Cenk Uygur: The left-wing political commentator denounced Wednesday’s violence, saying Kirk was “a real person, a human being, who just died in front of our eyes. Tragic!!”
