


Category 3 Hurricane Idalia made landfall just before 8 a.m. EDT Wednesday morning in Florida’s Big Bend Region with sustained wind speeds of 125 miles per hour, after gaining momentum overnight as it passed through the Gulf of Mexico, with the state on high alert for damaging winds and ocean surges.

The National Hurricane Center warned the the area where Idalia made landfall will face “catastrophic storm surge and destructive winds.”
Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) is warning residents to hunker down until the storm passes, “don’t put your life at risk by doing anything dumb at this point,” DeSantis said at a press conference Wednesday morning.
