Eligibility for the 2024 Grammys closed earlier this month, so the world is already familiar with the artists, albums and songs which will end up in the running for gold. For years now, one of the biggest names in K-pop has been shut out when it comes to the biggest prize in music, but this could possibly change soon.

Throughout 2023, Blackpink has remained relatively quiet in terms of releases, with "The Girls" being their sole new single of the year. While it didn't achieve the same level of commercial success as some of their previous hits, other factors may come into play as Grammy voters make their selections, and the tune could lead to the band’s first nomination.

"The Girls," released in mid-August, was created as a promotional single for Blackpink's mobile game, the aptly-titled Blackpink: The Game. Although the track didn't chart on the Hot 100, it did earn the group a spot on the Digital Song Sales chart, becoming another top 40 win for the vocal troupe.

While Grammy voters are encouraged to focus on artistic merit rather than commercial performance, chart-topping and widely recognized songs often garner more attention during the nomination process. "The Girls" may not fit this mold, but other considerations could sway voters.

Despite being one of the most successful K-pop girl groups globally, Blackpink has yet to receive any Grammy nominations. This oversight has led some in the music industry to question why a group of their stature has been so consistently overlooked. In the past, similar boy bands and girl groups with strong sales track records and massive fan bases have received recognition from the Recording Academy.

Timing is also important in this case. Blackpink's future as a group is uncertain, as negotiations regarding their contract with their label have reportedly hit roadblocks. With several members considering solo careers, the group's longevity may be in question. This could motivate Grammy voters to acknowledge their contributions to the music industry while they are still together.

While it remains a longshot, "The Girls" potentially earning a Grammy nomination—likely in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category, if any—is not impossible. The music industry is evolving, and there is a growing call for greater inclusion at the ceremony for artists from around the world. A nod for Blackpink would be a career-high, and even if they split shortly afterward, it would still show that the American music business recognizes their hard work, talent and impact.

The nominations for the 2024 Grammys will be unveiled in mid-November, and it remains to be seen whether Blackpink will secure a historic nomination or if they will have to wait for another opportunity in the future.
