President Joe Biden announced the reclassification in a video Thursday, saying “[t]oo may lives have been upended because of our failed approach to marijuana.”
Under the proposed move, marijuana will be reclassified from a Schedule I drug, according to the Drug Enforcement Agency—which groups it alongside drugs like heroin, LSD and ecstasy—to a Schedule III drug.
The proposal still needs final approval from the DEA.
