President Joe Biden told NBC’s Lester Holt on Monday it was a “mistake” to use the word “bullseye” while talking to donors about former President Donald Trump in a private call last week, walking back the term as he faces backlash from Republicans suggesting the president incited violence against Trump, who has targeted in an attempted assassination on Saturday.

Biden said his “bullseye” comment was a mistake, also defending his use of the word by saying it was meant to encourage others to move on from his rocky debate performance last month and instead focus on Trump’s policies and rhetoric.
“I have one job, and that’s to beat Donald Trump. I’m absolutely certain I’m the best person to be able to do that. So, we’re done talking about the debate, it’s time to put Trump in a bullseye,” Biden said on the call, according to Politico.
