Biden Hopes To Win Over Black Voters With New Outreach—As His Poll Numbers Dip Among Key Demographic
President Joe Biden’s re-election campaign is launching an initiative to win back Black voters—as polls show more from the reliably Democratic demographic plan to vote for former President Donald Trump than they did four years ago.

The Biden-Harris campaign will partner with Black community leaders, influencers and surrogates over the summer to host events in Black communities and engage with media outlets that cater to Black audiences, the campaign announced Wednesday.
Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris will kick off the initiative, “Black Voters for Biden-Harris” in Philadelphia Wednesday, followed by organizing events over the weekend in the six battleground states (Arizona, Nevada, Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Georgia).
The campaign is launching the eight-figure outreach initiative as both Biden and the Democratic party as a whole have lost support among Black voters since 2020, according to Pew Research.
As of April, Biden’s support among Black voters has dipped to 77% since 2020, when 92% voted for him over Trump, according to Pew, while 83% of Black registered voters identify as Democrats or leaning Democratic, compared to 88% four years ago.
Biden’s overall approval rating among Black Americans has also decreased dramatically throughout his presidency: from 87% in March 2021 to 55%, Pew found.
The survey shows younger Black voters (under 50) favor Trump over Biden (29% to 68%) by wider margins than older Black voters (9% to 84%), opposite from the electorate as a whole, in which older voters prefer Trump over Biden (51% to 46%) versus younger voters, who prefer Biden over Trump (52% to 46%).
1.1%. That’s how much Trump leads Biden by across the country, according to RealClearPolitics’ polling average.
Polls consistently show Trump and Biden within single digits of each other and Biden losing swing states to Trump, after Biden won all six states in 2020, solidifying his victory. In addition to Black voters, Biden has lost support among his base, including young voters, Latinos and Democratic strongholds, such as New York. Biden is up just nine points over Trump in New York, according to a May Siena College survey, after beating Trump there by 23 points in 2020. Capitalizing on Biden’s losses in New York and among Black and Latino voters, Trump campaigned in the Bronx last week, his first major rally since 2016 in New York City. The Siena poll found Biden has lost 20 points in New York City and Trump has gained seven since 2020, though Biden is still leading there by 26 points.
Improving education, strengthening the economy and making social security financially sound are the top three priorities, in that order, for Black voters in the 2024 election, among a range of issues the Pew survey asked about.
