The United Auto Workers is expanding its strike again Friday this time against Ford and General Motors after negotiations with the automakers remain stagnant, but workers at Stellantis will not expand their strike as the union said it made progress in those talks.
UAW’s strike against the big three is entering its third week.
Some 7,000 employees at a Ford plant in Chicago and a GM factory near Lansing, Michigan, are joining the picket line Friday, UAW President Shawn Fain announced at a press conference.
This is a breaking story and will be updated.
This is the second Friday in a row that Fain has announced an expansion of the autoworkers' strike. Last Friday, UAW added an additional 38 GM and Stellantis plants—all of the parts and distribution centers for the two carmakers—to the picket line, but said it made progress in negotiations with Ford. Among the requests UAW has for the automakers are annual cost-of-living adjustments, a 36% pay increase over a four-year contract and pension benefits for all employees.
