Minutes before the U.S. military launched strikes against the Houthi rebels in Yemen on March 15, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth texted specific plans for the attacks, including timing and weaponry, to a Signal group chat that included the Atlantic’s editor-in-chief, according to screenshots of the messages unveiled by the magazine Wednesday.

The texts published by the Atlantic contradict claims from Hegseth and National Security Advisor Mike Waltz that no “war plans” were discussed.
The Atlantic revealed the text messages two days after reporting Waltz added its editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, to a group chat of top Trump officials Waltz created to discuss the strikes.
National Security Council spokesperson Brian Hughes verified the legitimacy of the text thread on Monday, telling multiple outlets it appeared to be “authentic” and the council was “reviewing how an inadvertent number was added to the chain.”
