The first water main break was reported at around 8:30 a.m. Friday at a location where three water mains intersect within the city, according to the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management, and additional water main breaks were reported throughout the day on Friday.

Friday afternoon, the Department of Watershed Management announced it was issuing a boil water advisory “out of an abundance of caution,” allowing water services to continue until 5 p.m. to give residents time to prepare for repairs and water services were disrupted for wide swathes of the city, including all of downtown.

Services were still disrupted throughout the city Saturday and repairs were still ongoing, according to multiple local news outlets.

The situation led to the closure of local businesses and attractions, and the cancellation of several events, including a Friday night Megan Thee Stallion concert at State Farm Arena, which has been postponed until Sunday — a planned Saturday show is still set to go on, though the arena posted on X it’s in communication with the city.

Atlanta’s Watershed Management Department said all residents and property owners who have experienced water outages or low pressure should boil water or use bottled water for drinking, cooking, preparing baby food or brushing teeth. Water should be boiled for at least one minute. Residents are urged not to drink water from public water fountains. Water should be safe to use for “vigorous hand washing or showers with soap and tap water,” thought water should be boiled if used for handwashing ahead of food preparation.

The city is providing updates on its Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and website.
