According to the New Zealand Herald, which first reported the story, a technical issue caused “strong movement” onboard the flight and led to a sudden loss of altitude.
Some passengers and crew onboard were “thrown into the roof” of the plane due to the sudden drop.
The Sydney Morning Herald reported that of the 50 injured, seven passengers and three crew members were hospitalized.
According to FlightAware, the affected LA800 flight was a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and it landed successfully in Auckland at 4:26 p.m. local time.
This is a developing story.
