At least two U.S. troops were injured Saturday in attacks on the Al Asad Air Base in Iraq that U.S. officials believe Iran-backed militias carried out, according to the New York Times, citing unnamed officials, while noting reports were still being collected and that the number of injured could still grow, amid the continued escalation of tensions in the Middle East.

Heavy rocket or missile fire struck the base Saturday, the unnamed official told the Times.
An Iraqi soldier was also injured, according to the Times, citing Iraqi military spokesman Brig. Gen. Yahya Rasool.
The news comes hours after Israel reportedly launched an airstrike on Damascus in Syria that allegedly killed Iranian military advisors, but officials told the Times that it was not immediately clear if the attack in Iraq was related.
