Police responded to a shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia on Wednesday that killed at least two people, multiple outlets reported, and a suspect has been taken into custody.
Officials took one suspect into custody after responding to the high school for an active shooting incident just before 10:30 a.m., according to a statement from the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office.
There were at least five ambulances at the high school—which had about 1,900 students last fall—along with one medical helicopter and a significant law enforcement presence, CNN reported.
The school had been put on lockdown but was taken off lockdown a little before 11:30 a.m., Fox News Atlanta reported, and students were able to be picked up.
FBI Atlanta said in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, it is aware of the shooting and has agents on scene assisting local law enforcement, and Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp tweeted he “directed all available state resources to respond to the incident.”
