Hollywood Strikes

Today, the Hollywood writers’ strike has hit the 100 day mark.

With no current contract talks in progress, all involved are wondering what it will take to bring the stand-off between the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and studio collective of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) to an end.

This current labor movement, which now surpasses the 2007-2008 strike, began on May 2rd after negotiations between the WGA and AMPTP initially broke down.

The entities are at an impasses over writer compensation, the size of writers’ rooms, and residual payments in the streaming era, among other issues.

During an earnings call last week, Warner Bros Discovery Chief Executive David Zaslav told investors of the strike, “We are in some uncharted waters.”

The century date marks what WGA rep Chris Keyser and David A. Goodman, who serves as co-chair the WGA’s negotiating committee, call a “milestone of shame” for the AMPTP.

The day also comes just shortly after a meeting between the two sides that many hoped would kick off a new round of negotiations. But the gathering, held last Friday, proved not to be that catalyst, with the WGA proclaiming that there was ‘no agreement’ on resuming talks.

If the strike continues for another 53 days, it will become the longest strike in the guild’s history.

To hear more about the work stoppage, The Hollywood Reporter’s TV’s Top 5 podcast has an interview with Chris Keyser that will be available on Friday, August 12th.

Some highlights from the interview, as posted by The Hollywood Reporter today, include Keyser saying, “The WGA is not particularly interested in playing games. Talking is the only way forward. There’s a sense somehow that you label something 100 days like it’s some kind of celebration. It’s an anniversary of shame for the AMPTP, let’s be clear about that.”

When asked if he has any idea when talks will resume, Keyser responded, “I don’t know. It’s impossible to get inside their heads. They could be negotiating among themselves about what they’re willing to offer. They could be delaying for the sake of delaying.”

But, he did offer a tiny bit of optimism in saying, “Once [the WGA and AMPTP] get into a room and they’re open to having real conversations, you do go very fast. Real negotiations don’t take very long. It’s really a question of how long it’s going to take the companies to say, ‘We understand that we have no choice but to sit down and have a real conversation.’”
