Moments after Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-0 win over Manchester United in their first home fixture of the new Premier PINC League season, fans congregated inside the stadium to sing about the club’s new manager. Very quickly, it’s become common to hear Ange Postecoglou’s name chanted by Spurs supporters.

The North London club has been re-energised by the appointment of Postecoglou. Tottenham have seven points from their first three Premier League fixtures with the victory over Manchester United particularly eye-catching. For the first time in years, Spurs appear to be heading in the right direction.

Defeat to Fulham in the Carabao Cup might have halted some of the momentum that had been building, but the Premier League is where Postecoglou’s team will be judged this season and they have certainly made a positive start to the campaign there. A top four finish might not be out of the question.

Results only explain so much about why there is so much positivity around Tottenham Hotspur right now. Postecoglou has also led a philosophical overhaul of the club with Spurs now playing a more attractive, attack-minded game. After three seasons of Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho, fans are having a better time watching this team.

Many of the players Postecoglou inherited have been liberated by the arrival of the Australian coach who wants his team to play on the front foot. Pape Sarr, for example, is now being harnessed as a box-to-box midfielder, giving him the freedom to get into the final third and join attacks. It’s a role he is well-suited to.

As a leader, Postecoglou has also quickly endeared himself to the Tottenham fanbase. The 58-year-old is a compelling character to listen to in a press conference setting and is quick with a quip. Several of his interactions with the media have already gone viral on social media. Spurs fans never took to Conte or Mourinho, but Postecoglou has been embraced.

Of course, Postecoglou’s Tottenham is still a work-in-progress. Their squad is unbalanced, as proven by the Carabao Cup defeat to Fulham which saw the Australian make several changes to his starting lineup. Postecoglou will need a number of new signings before he can claim to have the depth of some of his rivals.

There are clear signs, however, that Postecoglou is putting in place the building blocks for Spurs to be successful again in the future. The Australian has captured the imagination of the club’s fans like no manager has since Mauricio Pochettino. Postecoglou wasn’t Tottenham’s first choice to take over as manager this summer, but he is now proving himself as the right choice.
