Chris Eubanks is playing in his first Wimbledon and is certainly not known as a grass court aficionado.

If one were going to pick an American man to make a run at this Wimbledon, Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe or Sebastian Korda might have been more likely selections.

But while those three are out of the tournament, the 6-foot-7 Eubanks, an Atlanta native who played three seasons at Georgia Tech before forgoing his senior year of eligibility to turn pro, has made a dream run to the quarterfinals in his Wimbledon debut.

Eubanks, 27, won his ninth straight grass court match by eliminating No. 5 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas, 3-6. 7-6(4), 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. Next up he will face No. 3 Daniil Medvedev in the quarterfinals after the Russian advanced over Jiri Lehecka via retirement after leading by two sets. It is the first major quarterfinal for Eubanks, and first Wimbledon quarterfinal for Medvedev.

Eubanks closed the match out with a massive forehand winner up the line and then met Tsitsipas at the net. Soon Eubanks was standing at midcourt looking up at the crowd and putting his hands over his face. He later took a selfie with fans and signed a few autographs before jogging around the perimeter of the court to pick up his bag and sign more autographs.

“I feel like I’m living a dream right now,” he said on court. “This is absolutely insane.”

Eubanks was 2-8 in Grand Slam tournaments coming into Wimbledon, and is now 4-0 at The All-England Club. He has won nine straight on grass after coming in having won the grass court warm-up in Mallorca, Spain.

He joins Americans Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys on the women’s side among Americans in the quarterfinals.

“I have to admit, I thought that we’d see a run from an American player this year at Wimbledon,” Patrick McEnroe said on air. “Tiafoe, Fritz, maybe Korda, I didn’t expect it to be this year, but man, this has been a fun ride.”

Eubanks used a big serve, a potent one-handed backhand and an attacking game to take out Tsitsipas, who had defeated two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray over the weekend. He finished with 12 aces and broke Tsitsipas on 3-of-7 occasions.

“I like to consider myself a server and I think servers really show that their servers in moments like that, whether it’s consolidating a break, serving out sets, serving out matches and although it got a little bit dicey at the end, I still could have confidence to say I’m a server, I hit serving targets for these moments right here, so I just have to do what I know how to do,” he said.

He added: “The funny thing about tennis is, you’re not always going to play you’re best, you just have to play really good at certain times,” Eubanks said. “And I felt like I did that really well today.

“When it came to winning at important times, I felt that I executed really clearly and I played really well. I had a little bit of ups and downs, you can imagine the first time in the fourth round of a Slam, but I came up clutch when I needed to, man. And because of this atmosphere, you guys pushed me to be able to do some incredible stuff.

“You guys came out in full force to support me today and I can’t put into words what it means.”

Eubanks will now get Medvedev, the who is into his seventh major quarterfinal, first at Wimbledon.

He will be a decided underdog again, but the way Eubanks is playing on grass, you can’t bet against him.

“The grass and I, we’ve had a very strenuous relationship over the years, but right now I think it’s my best friend,” Eubanks said.
