A 4.0 magnitude aftershock was recorded Friday evening just before 6 p.m. southwest of Gladstone, New Jersey, the United States Geological Survey reported, following a historic earthquake Friday morning that rattled much of the Northeast but did not appear to cause any major damage.
The aftershock followed a 4.8 magnitude earthquake in the northeastern U.S. on Friday morning that briefly shook New Jersey, New York City, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania.
The USGS said it’s likely there are smaller aftershocks within the next week and predicted prior to Friday evening’s quake there was a 16% chance of an aftershock with a magnitude of 4.0 or greater.
Following the aftershock, New York’s emergency notification system advised residents to stay indoors, but New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said on X, formerly known as Twitter, that “there are no reports of significant damage at this time.”
More aftershocks. The USGS said in a post on X that aftershocks “will continue for days and weeks ahead.”
44%. That’s the likelihood that there is at least one aftershock with a 3.0 magnitude or greater in the next day, according to USGS.
