NASHVILLE, TN - JUNE 04: Jason Aldean poses at the 2014 CMT Music Awards - Wonderwall Portrait ... [+]
After a fierce race to the top of the Hot 100 last week, there's been a significant shift in the ranking of two of the biggest hits of the year in America. Jason Aldean's "Try That in a Small Town" has now replaced BTS singer Jung Kook's "Seven" in the No. 1 spot.
In the previous tracking frame, both songs made massive debuts and battled for the top position. Jung Kook's solo single "Seven" was the early frontrunner, but things changed and the race became much tighter as the tracking period progressed. Mid-week, the controversy surrounding Aldean's single and its accompanying video became trending topics, prompting a surge of support from his fanbase. “Seven” opened in first place, while "Try That in a Small Town" settled for No. 2.
As fans rallied behind him, Aldean's "Try That in a Small Town" gained momentum, leading to a real competition between the two songs. In the end, Jung Kook was crowned the champion, but the tides have turned.
"Try That in a Small Town" has now replaced "Seven" at the No. 1 position on the Hot 100. The tune marks Aldean's first chart-topping hit on the list. The song's success can be attributed to the continued strong sales, with another impressive 175,000 copies sold in the current week, according to Billboard. It also became a streaming smash, as it bolts to No. 3 on this week’s Streaming Songs chart. These numbers are exceptional for any song, especially following another week of huge consumption figures.
In a sign that he has a true hit on his hands, Jung Kook's "Seven" hasn't fallen too far from the top, managing to place at No. 9 on the Hot 100 this week. Remaining inside the top 10 for a second consecutive frame is an accomplishment in itself, showcasing the enduring popularity of the K-pop star's debut solo single.
"Seven" initially debuted at No. 1 due to its remarkable sales and impressive streaming figures. The song even made a noteworthy impact on radio, charting on several of Billboard's radio-only charts—an uncommon feat for a solo South Korean artist.
Interestingly, Aldean managed to outsell the BTS superstar last frame, a surprising turn of events that caught many off guard at the beginning of the tracking period. "Try That in a Small Town" saw massive success primarily due to the strong sales, with an impressive 228,000 copies sold. This propelled the song to the peak of the Digital Song Sales chart, surpassing "Seven" in this category. It tops that same tally this week as well.
