Former President Donald Trump acknowledged Thursday that abortion was an issue that doesn’t lean towards the Republicans as he continued to defend the Supreme Court’s scrapping of Roe v. Wade—a move Trump has taken credit for—in an interview on Newsmax, just minutes after Vice President Kamala Harris’ speech at the Democratic National Convention called him out for bragging about taking away “reproductive freedom.”

Shortly after the DNC ended, Trump dialed into Fox News to criticize Harris’ speech and later switched to Newsmax, where he continued to attack the vice president and the Democrats on various issues, including the border.
Responding to Harris’ remarks about abortion, Trump acknowledged “I’m not going to say it's an issue that leans toward us,” but claimed that “everybody”—including Democrats, Republicans and legal scholars—wanted the issue to be “brought back to the states.”
In her speech, Harris said Trump “handpicked members of the U.S. Supreme Court to take away reproductive freedom, and now he brags about it.”

“Children who have survived sexual assault, potentially being forced to carry a pregnancy to term. This is what’s happening in our country because of Donald Trump…Simply put, they are out of their minds. And one must ask — one must ask, why exactly is it that they don’t trust women? In her speech, Harris warned if Trump returned to power, he and his allies would “limit access to birth control, ban medication abortion and enact a nationwide abortion ban, with or without Congress.” Trump, who was doing a play-by-play reaction to Harris’ speech on his Truth Social platform, responded by saying: “I do not limit access to birth control or I.V.F. - THAT IS A LIE, these are all false stories that she’s making up.” And on abortion, the former president wrote: “Like Ronald Reagan and myself, most believe in EXCEPTIONS” and people from individual states voting on the matter is “the way it was supposed to be.” Harris, on the other hand, vowed: “When Congress passes a bill to restore reproductive freedom, as president of the United States, I will proudly sign it into law.”
