


The 911 phone system in Massachusetts went down Tuesday afternoon, according to a statewide public safety alert, leading officials to tell people to call precincts or pull fire boxes during emergencies—though the source of the massive outage was not immediately clear.

911 calls made throughout the state are “not going through,” Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said in a Thursday afternoon press conference, adding state officials are working to resolve the outage.
The Boston Police Department and Fire Department confirmed the outage in separate posts on X, advising people in need of emergency assistance to reach out to their local police station, pull a roadside fire box or approach an officer.
