A subway train in New York City derailed after colliding with a work train Thursday afternoon in Manhattan, injuring an estimated 24 people, according to New York City officials.

The derailment happened on the 1 train line around 3 p.m. and was near 96th Street in Manhattan, according to a tweet from the Metropolitan Transit Authority.

Emergency teams are “assisting passengers and conducting an investigation,” according to the MTA’s social media.

An internal police report said a work train was changing tracks when it was hit by the passenger train, which led to the derailment, though no details on why they collided were in the report, according to the New York Times.

Of the 24 injured people, eight were taken to hospitals, the New York Times reported, though no injuries were life-threatening.

There were an estimated 300 people on the passenger train who were evacuated, officials said, and four employees on the work train, which was out of service after being vandalized.

Just before 4 p.m. the MTA said there was no service on three subway lines—the 1, 2 and 3—in Manhattan and was encouraging people to take other routes or buses, though service on the lines was starting to return by 5:30 p.m.

What caused the trains to collide. Officials said in a press conference Thursday evening that there was “nothing to suggest it was equipment-related” and the equipment was “working as intended.”

“The trains, literally, at slow speed, thankfully, bumped into each other just north of the station. We were able to evacuate a number of our customers,” MTA president Richard Davey said, according to CBS News.
