Scientists Tuesday confirmed 2023 as the hottest year on record, as experts warn 2024 could be hotter still as climate change raises temperatures towards critical thresholds that could cause lasting damage to the environment and human health.
The average global temperature was 14.98C in 2023, the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service reported.
The figure beat out the previous record of 14.81C set in 2016 by a “large margin” of 0.17C, Copernicus said.
“Unprecedented” global temperatures from June onwards led to the new record, Copernicus said, with each month through December being “warmer than the corresponding month in any previous year.”
This is a developing story.
