Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) touted the new titanium design of the iPhone 15 Pro as one of the highlights of its latest flagship, but it might not be all that durable.

“The first iPhone 15 Pro drop test shows that the titanium design with round edges is actually less durable than the iPhone 14 Pro’s stainless steel design,” said to AppleTrack’s Sam Kohl.

The titanium sides of the iPhone 15 Pro end up dispersing the pressure of the impact to the front and back glass, leading to spiderweb cracks. While these cracks don’t need immediate repair and glass replacement, you will eventually have to get it done.

On the other hand, the stainless steel band of the iPhone 14 Pro managed to absorb much of the impact of the drops on a concrete floor, allowing the phone to last longer. The band itself showed dings and scratches fairly quickly, but it was better at retaining the overall structural integrity.

The video shows the iPhone 15 Pro developing cracks halfway through the drop test, while the iPhone 14 Pro managed to remain in near-perfect condition till the very end.

Why It Matters: At one point, the drops started affecting the iPhone 15 Pro’s display as well, with the bottom half only showing white pixels. To make matters worse, the camera module also detached from the back of the phone.

“A dead display on the iPhone 15 Pro will cost $329 for a replacement, same as its predecessor. However, the back glass is now cheaper to replace, costing $169, as compared to $499 on the iPhone 14 Pro,” said Benzinga.

It is worth noting though, that while titanium is not more durable, it did help Apple in reducing the overall weight of the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max – both the phones are nearly 10% lighter than their predecessors.
