Zelenskyy: Only through strength can Russia be forced to respect rules

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has concluded a significant visit to the United States and noted that his strategy of achieving peace through a position of strength had received full endorsement, according to a statement released upon his return.

Zelenskyy came to the US on 22 September, just ahead of the presidential election, meeting with key figures, including Biden, Harris, and Trump, to ensure ongoing US support for Ukraine and present Ukraine’s victory plan.

Ukrainian President reiterated Ukraine’s desire for peace but insisted it must be achieved through a position of strength.

“Only through strength can Russia be forced to respect rules and adhere to basic world documents,” Zelenskyy said.

In a nod to the bipartisan nature of US support for Ukraine, Zelenskyy met with members of Congress from both parties. He also held separate meetings with Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, describing both encounters as substantive and important.

“The meeting with Kamala Harris – all important points were made, almost an hour-long conversation. The meeting with Donald Trump – this is our second meeting since 2019, and right now when it’s so important. Thank you for your attention to the details of our Victory Plan,” Zelenskyy said.

The centerpiece of the visit was a new $8 billion aid package from the US, which Zelenskyy says includes “weapons for the front, and air defense for our cities, and expansion of the F-16 training mission.”

This represents the largest single package of support to date, underscoring the continued commitment of the Biden administration to Ukraine’s defense efforts.

While details of the victory plan were not disclosed, the Ukrainian leader indicated that it would be discussed further with allies in Germany at an upcoming “Ramstein format” meeting.

“October is the time for decisions,” Zelenskyy stated.

The visit also saw progress on reconstruction efforts, with Zelenskyy announcing a G7+ declaration on rebuilding Ukraine. According to the president, over 30 countries have already signed on to this initiative, which he described as a “clear signal that together with allies, we will restore normal life after the war.”

The president concluded his statement with a call for continued international solidarity, asserting that unity among allies and the broader world community is crucial to “stop Russia, this war, and guarantee a true honest peace.”
