European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced an agreement with Ukraine to allocate two billion euros ($2.3bn) for drone technology during a press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.
Von der Leyen emphasized the need to continue and strengthen military support for Ukraine “if we believe that Ukraine is the first line of our defense.”
“We have agreed with Ukraine that a total of 2 billion euros will be spent on unmanned aerial vehicles. Now this allows Ukraine to scale up and use its potential to the full extent,” she said.
The European Commission President added that this will also enable the European Union to benefit from the technology.
In early September, von der Leyen announced the advance allocation of a 6 billion euro loan, financed by proceeds from frozen Russian assets, for the production of drones for Ukraine.
Europeiska Pravda also reported that Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius called for the urgent development of a “drone wall” on the EU’s eastern flank, commenting on violations of Polish airspace by Russian drones.
According to media reports, when creating the “drone wall,” the European Union will rely on technologies that have proven effective in Ukraine.
