Ukrenergo: Power outages in Ukraine’s seven regions due to Russian air attack on energy grid

Ukraine’s energy infrastructure was targeted in a significant Russian air attack, resulting in damage and emergency power outages in seven regions, per Ukrenergo. Repair efforts are underway, supported by international aid from three countries.

Dozens of energy infrastructure objects in Ukraine have been damaged due to Russia’s massive air attack, resulting in emergency power outages across seven regions. Ukrenergo, the country’s electricity transmission system operator, reported receiving emergency assistance from three countries.

On 22 March, Russian forces launched a combined missile and drone attack on critical infrastructure in Ukraine, using drones, ballistic, and cruise missiles. Explosions were reported in cities including Kharkiv, Dnipro, Poltava, Kryvyi Rih, Zaporizhzhia, Kropyvnytskyi, Khmelnytskyi, Odesa, Lviv, and Ivano-Frankivsk oblasts. The strikes targeted energy facilities, resulting in casualties, injuries, and disruptions to water and electricity supplies. The Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant lost connection to one power line, and the Dnipro hydroelectric power plant was severely damaged by hits.

This morning, the enemy deliberately launched a combined massive attack on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. According to the General Staff, the Russians fired 90 missiles of various types and 60 drones at Ukraine. Dozens of power system facilities were damaged: thermal and hydroelectric power plants, main power grids of NPC Ukrenergo, and regional power company networks. The situation is most difficult in Kharkiv, Odesa, Kirovohrad, and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts,” the Ukrenergo’s statement reads.

Ukrenergo says that despite the massive attack, the integrity of the power system remained intact. Repair crews from Ukrenergo and regional energy companies have commenced emergency restoration work following the end of the air alarm.

In an update at 11:00, Ukrenergo announced that repair brigades have successfully restored the 750 kV line, ensuring that the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (Zaporizhzhia NPP) is now powered by two operational lines.

Earlier, Ukraine’s nuclear operator Energoatom reported that the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, temporarily occupied by Russia, lost connection to one of its power lines due to Russian shelling.

As a result of the emergency caused by the Russian morning attacks on energy infrastructure, electricity consumption is being limited in seven regions of Ukraine, including Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Kirovohrad, Odesa, Poltava, Sumy, and Kharkiv oblasts.

To support the safe operation of Ukraine’s power system during this challenging period, emergency aid has been provided by the power systems of Romania, Slovakia, and Poland, according to Ukrenergo.
