Ukraine says it struck Russian Nebo-M radar with ATACMS, potentially enhancing cruise missile effectiveness

The Ukrainian military says the destruction of the costly radar, with only 10 reportedly remaining operational, could improve conditions for Ukrainian air attacks.

Ukraine says it struck Russian Nebo-M radar with ATACMS, potentially enhancing cruise missile effectiveness

Ukraine’s General Staff reported on 3 October that Ukrainian defense forces successfully struck a Russian Nebo-M radar station using US-supplied ATACMS ballistic missiles. The destruction of this sophisticated radar system is expected to significantly reduce the Russian army’s ability to detect, track, and intercept aerodynamic and ballistic targets, as per the report.

Russian air defense assets are priority targets for Ukraine, as destroying launchers and radars clears the way for Ukrainian drones, missiles, and allows aircraft to operate closer to the frontline. The General Staff did not specify the date or location of the strike, but given the US ban on using ATACMS within Russia, the strike likely occurred in occupied southern Ukraine, where multi-layered air defenses protect occupied Crimea.

According to the Ukrainian military, the Nebo-M radar is a highly complex target that operates in stealth mode, scanning the horizon for aerial objects. The system is valued at over $100 million, with only 10 operational systems of this type reportedly remaining in the Russian arsenal, the report states.

The General Staff suggests that the reported destruction of the Nebo-M radar would create a favorable “air corridor” for the effective use of Storm Shadow and SCALP-EG cruise missiles by Ukrainian forces. These long-range cruise missiles have been supplied to Ukraine by the UK and France, respectively, and have been used in multiple high-profile strikes against Russian targets before.

At the time of publication, Euromaidan Press could not find independent confirmation of the Nebo-M’s destruction.

“Nebo” is a family of Russian radar stations operating in the meter wavelength range, including several variants of the radar. Earlier this year, Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) targeted a Nebo-U radar in Russia’s Bryansk Oblast. Additionally, in November of the previous year, Ukrainian forces struck two Russian military radars, the Nebo 55Zh6 and Gamma-S1E, in Russia’s Kursk Oblast.
