The Ukrainian government has allowed Ukrainians to register marriages online through the state electronic portal Diia, announced Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov. The service will soon be available in the mobile application.

“Ukrainians will be able to get married right in the app. This is especially relevant for military personnel and couples who are separated due to the war,” the minister wrote on Telegram.

Here’s how online marriage will work:

1. Submit an application in the app;
2. A civil registry office employee conducts the wedding ceremony via video call;
3. The newlyweds then sign the marriage certificate with the “Diia.Signature” e-signature.

According to Fedorov, this will be a breakthrough in the realm of government services, as nothing like this exists anywhere else in the world.

As of February 2023, Ukrainian adults with e-signatures can use Diia to apply for marriage registration in under 15 minutes.
