Ukraine hits two radars in Russia’s Kursk Oblast

Ukrainian forces successfully hit Russian radar installations in Kursk Oblast, a move possibly aimed at weakening Russian air defenses as Ukraine anticipates Western fighter jets.

Ukrainian forces hit two Russian military radars, Nebo 55Zh6 and presumably Gamma-S1E, in Russia’s Kursk Oblast. The Ukrainian Defense Ministry’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR) published a relevant statement on its Telegram channel, sharing footage of the strikes.

“On 18 November 2023, an enemy radio equipment position was discovered near the village of Dmitriev, Kursk region. Two expensive Russian radar stations were damaged – the 55Zh6 Nebo radar and, probably, the Gamma-S1E radar,” the HUR wrote.

The total Russian losses from the attack are being clarified, according to the intelligence agency.

Nebo is a family of Russian meter wave radar stations. The Gamma-S1 is a Russian mobile three-coordinate general-purpose centimeter wavelength medium-range mobile radar station.

For months, Ukrainian forces have been depleting the Russian air defense and air assets to prepare the battlefield for the arrival of Ukraine’s F-16 Western fighter jets.
