Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vietnamese President To Lam discussed developing bilateral relations and increasing trade turnover, particularly in the agricultural industry, according to a statement from the Office of the President of Ukraine.

Since Russia’s invasion in 2022, Vietnam has maintained a relatively neutral stance on the Ukraine conflict, abstaining from UN votes condemning Russia’s actions. However, Vietnam has provided some humanitarian aid to Ukraine, including medical supplies and food donations. The two countries continue diplomatic relations, though Vietnam’s historical ties with Russia have limited its outright support for Ukraine.

During the meeting, President To Lam said that trade with Ukraine declined in 2022 but began to gradually increase again last year. He proposed that both countries work on expanding trade in various sectors.

“If the President wants and gives the appropriate impetus, I think it would be good for our teams and ministries to work together and see what can be done to increase trade turnover between our countries,” Zelenskyy said.

The Ukrainian leader expressed gratitude to Vietnam for providing $500,000 through international humanitarian organizations and its willingness to participate in Ukraine’s reconstruction after the war ended.

Ukraine exported nearly 692,000 tons of sugar in the 2023-2024 marketing season, which ended on 31 August. This represents an increase of approximately 60% compared to the previous year, when Ukraine had a temporary ban on sugar exports.
