Scholz, Biden, Macron, and Starmer to meet in Berlin on 12 Oct for crucial Ukraine talks

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will host US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Berlin on 12 October, Bloomberg reports, citing a senior German government official. This meeting precedes talks with the Ukraine Contact Group at Ramstein Air Base.

This meeting occurs at a crucial point in Russia’s war on Ukraine. With the outcome uncertain and Western support in question, leaders seek to reassure Kyiv while facing pressure to pursue peace talks, despite stark differences between Ukrainian and Russian positions.

According to Bloomberg, the leaders are expected to reaffirm their commitment to Ukraine’s military and financial support and discuss potential paths to a “just and sustainable peace” for the country.

Following the Berlin meeting, the four leaders will join approximately 20 other heads of state, including Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, at Ramstein Air Base for the Ukraine Contact Group summit. Zelenskyy is anticipated to present Ukraine’s “victory plan,” a strategy previously shared with Washington but not yet publicly revealed in Ukraine.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre emphasized that a key focus of Biden’s Germany visit is to ensure continued support for Ukraine in countering Russian aggression.
