Russian attack on Izmail in Odesa Oblast kills three people, injures 14

A Russian drone attack on the city of Izmail in Ukraine’s Odesa Oblast in the early hours of the morning has resulted in three fatalities and eleven injuries, including one child, according to Governor Oleh Kiper.

The attack on Izmail, a port city on the Danube River, represents another instance of Russian forces targeting Ukrainian civilian infrastructure.

Governor said that three people died: two women born in 1934 and 1955 and a 73-year-old man. The number of injured has risen to 14 people, including three children aged 3, 13, and 14, the regional prosecutor’s office reports.

The attack also caused damage to private and residential buildings, outbuildings, and vehicles.

The assault triggered several fires, which were “promptly extinguished by our firefighters,” Kiper said. He adds that “law enforcement officers are recording the consequences of the Russian terrorist act.”

According to local authorities, an air raid alert was declared in the Odesa Oblast at 11 pm on 26 September. The Air Force reported a threat of strike UAVs and possible air defense activity. A Suspilne correspondent reported explosions in Odesa around 1 am and Izmail at 2:33 am.

According to Ukraine’s Air Defense, Ukraine downed 24 out of 32 Shaheds launched by the Russian army at night. The Russian military also launched an Iskander-M missile and two X-22 cruise missiles, the command added.

One drone entered Romania’s airspace, and another was “locally lost” due to electronic warfare. It’s not the first time a Russian drone has entered a NATO member country. On 9 September, the Romanian Ministry of Defense reported that debris from a Russian drone was discovered on Romanian territory. The drone fragments were found near the Ukrainian border, close to the town of Periprava in Tulcea County.
