Russian attack cuts power to 37,000 in Ukraine’s border Sumy oblast as temps drop to +2°C/36°F

Russian forces targeted energy infrastructure in Sumy Oblast, Ukraine, early 20 October, plunging over 100 settlements into darkness. The regional power distribution company reports that 37,000 consumers lost electricity in the Romny district. Morning temperatures in Ukraine hit 2°C (36°F).

Russia continues its deliberate daily air attacks on residential areas in attempts to terrorize civilians and damage civilian infrastructure. The Russian forces launch dozens of Shahed long-range “kamikaze” drones every night, often also launching several missiles during the attack.

Emergency services contained a fire at the damaged facility by 8:50 AM Kyiv time.

“No casualties reported. Energy crews are assessing damage and working on equipment repairs,” Valentyna Nazarenko, acting head of the Romny District Administration, wrote on Facebook.

The attack also caused minor damage to 12 houses and four apartments in the district’s main town, Romny.

This strike follows a day of intense shelling in the region, with 41 attacks and 71 explosions recorded on 19 October. Overnight, Ukrainian forces intercepted 11 Shahed drones over Sumy Oblast.
