Russia targets railways in Odesa and Konotop
Ukraine’s Vice Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba reported that the Russian military struck a railway depot in Odesa during the night. A train driver sustained shrapnel wounds in the attack and is receiving medical assistance.
Northern areas also came under fire, with strikes reported on railway infrastructure in Konotop, Sumy Oblast, and other border communities. As a result, trains on the Sumy and Chernihiv directions were delayed, though services resumed by morning. The contact network was restored.
Kuleba stated that trains had stopped at a safe distance from the affected zones and moved on once the threat passed.
“Russia tries every day to destroy one of the foundations of Ukraine’s resilience — our infrastructure that keeps the country together,” he said, noting that railways, roads, and energy systems remain under constant pressure.
The official called on allies to strengthen sanctions against Russia and cut off all supply chains.
Kyiv Oblast suffers civilian injuries and blackouts
In Kyiv Oblast, the Russian drone attack injured a 50-year-old man, suffering a shrapnel wound to his right shin. He was hospitalized, local authorities reported.
Civilian woman killed in Balakliia missile strike
In a separate attack on 1 October, Russian forces launched an Iskander-M ballistic missile at the center of Balakliia, Kharkiv Oblast, the local prosecutor’s office says.
The missile struck the ground next to a five-story residential building, killing one woman and injuring 16 people, according to the local city military administration. The Kharkiv Oblast Prosecutor’s Office reported that among the injured was a 4-year-old girl who suffered an acute stress reaction.

The blast damaged civilian infrastructure including a pharmacy, a café, shops, administrative buildings and several cars.
Ukraine intercepts majority of drones, but dozens still strike
According to Ukraine’s Air Force, Russia launched a total of 86 attack UAVs overnight, including Shahed, Gerbera and other types, from four directions — Bryansk, Oryol, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, and Millerovo. Ukrainian air defenses, including aviation, electronic warfare units and mobile fire groups, shot down or disabled 53 drones by 09:00.
Despite these interceptions, 31 drones hit targets in six separate locations across northern, southern and eastern Ukraine. The Air Force warned that additional enemy drones were still active in Ukrainian airspace at the time of the reporting.
