“Runway for drones, classroom for war”: Camp Jomsborg in Poland becomes Europe’s frontline school for modern combat

Soldiers from Ukraine and allied nations will train here side by side, mastering drone warfare, electronic defense, and real battlefield tactics drawn from Ukraine’s war experience.

“Runway for drones, classroom for war”: Camp Jomsborg in Poland becomes Europe’s frontline school for modern combat

A mutual support center was launched in Poland amid the Russian threat. Near the Ukrainian border, a training center for the Ukrainian army and allies has been opened, capable of hosting 1,200 soldiers at a time, the Polish Defense Ministry reports.

Poland is one of Ukraine’s key allies, and military aid passes through its logistical military hubs. If Russia succeeds in spreading misunderstandings between Warsaw and Kyiv, it could weaken the Ukrainian Armed Forces and give the occupiers an advantage.

The center is not only designed to train Ukrainian soldiers, but allies will also gain experience in countering drones and using UAVs under real combat conditions.

Currently, Ukraine is the only European country with successful experience in modern warfare.

Drone incidents in Norway

The Polish Defense Ministry says the center was opened in southeastern Poland with support from Norway.

At least five drone incidents were recorded in Norway from mid-September to early October 2025. The most recent occurred on 30 September, when Brønnøysund airport was closed overnight due to a drone.

Poland has already faced threats from Russia

In 2025, Russian drones and cyberattacks repeatedly threatened Polish security. On the night of 10 September, about 19 Russian UAVs entered Polish airspace, and only four were shot down. This result was achieved with the deployment of NATO’s F‑16 and F‑35 aircraft, which have appeared to be ineffective against cheap drones.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reported that Russia launched a total of 92 drones towards Poland, 73 of which were shot down by Ukraine’s air defense.

Camp Jomsborg: a modern training center for the Ukrainian Armed Forces and allies

The new Camp Jomsborg has become a symbol of international support for Ukraine, combining soldier training, experience exchange with allies, and mastering technologies to counter modern threats, including drones.

Camp Jomsborg is equipped with a runway for launching drones and special zones to study Ukraine’s wartime experience and implement the best solutions on the battlefield.

“Opening the center demonstrates the ability to train Ukrainian soldiers in large numbers in a good location — the Podkarpackie region near Ukraine, on a training ground that is truly starting a second life. This training ground is gaining capabilities it has never had before,” said Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.

Runway and drones: frontline training

“Next to us is a runway for launching drones. There is a place to study Ukraine’s ongoing war experience, implement the best solutions for countering drones, and use the drones that the Ukrainian army possesses,” Kosiniak-Kamysz added.

Officials from Ukraine, Poland, Norway, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Sweden, and Iceland attended the event. The Polish official thanked the Norwegian side for implementing the initiative quickly and emphasized the importance of using Ukrainian experience in training allies.

Ukraine proposes a joint “air shield”

According to Bild, NATO spent at least €1.2 million to shoot down cheap Russian drones that entered Polish territory, while the cost of a single Russian strike drone is only a few thousand euros.

At the same time, Ukraine fights drones using an air-defense system that includes mobile firing units on vehicles, electronic warfare systems, helicopters, and aircraft.

Recently, President Zelenskyy proposed creating a joint “air shield” to counter Russian drones and missiles.

Starlink and international support: a critical technology

In April 2025, head of Russian foreign intelligence Sergey Naryshkin accused NATO of increasing activity near Russia’s borders and warned that Poland and the Baltic states would be the first targets in case of war.

According to Andrii Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Center for Countering Disinformation, Russia is reportedly preparing sabotage-and-reconnaissance groups from Russian and Belarusian special units to infiltrate Polish territory, with critical infrastructure as the likely targets. The claims stem from Russian media reports attempting to shift responsibility for such operations onto Ukraine.
