Romania backs marine training center for Ukraine

Romania’s Parliament has approved the creation of a training center for Ukrainian marines, according to Militarnyi.

Establishing this center was proposed within the Ukraine Defense Contact Group framework to enhance the country’s maritime capabilities. Romania will support the training of Ukrainian marines within its available capacities.

The decision was made during a plenary session on 1 October, where lawmakers approved a request from Romanian President Klaus Iohannis.

The decision was supported by 233 deputies, with 18 voting against and 25 abstaining, Agerpres reports.

In his address to the parliament, Iohannis wrote that recent developments in Russia’s war have highlighted the need to strengthen and diversify Ukraine’s Armed Forces’ training.

The proposed plan states that the center will operate for two years. At the same time, Romania reserves the right to withdraw from its obligations at any point during the training process or at the end of the agreed period.

Contributions from the international community will fund the center’s operation, with the UK providing full financing in the initial phase of its development.

Recently, Romania announced it would finance the training of Ukrainian pilots on F-16 fighter jets at the training center at Fetesti Air Base.

The Regional F-16 Pilot Training Center was established jointly with other allies and Lockheed Martin, which manufactures these American fighter jets. It meets NATO pilot training requirements.

This way, Romania will join the “aviation coalition,” which supports the training of Ukrainian pilots and ground personnel and the transfer of modern multirole fighters as part of military assistance.
