On 8 December 2023, President of Russia Vladimir Putin announced that he would run for a new presidential term in 2024, the Russian state-owned news media RIA Novosti reported.

Vladimir Putin announced his plan to run for the presidency in Russia during an event in honor of the Day of Heroes of the Motherland.

“I will not hide the fact that at different times, I had different opinions, but now is the time when decisions need to be made. I will run for the presidency of the Russian Federation,” Putin said.

The Russian presidential election will be held in March 2023. The election would last three days: from 15 to 17 March.

Vladimir Putin was elected president of Russia in 2000, 2004, 2012, and 2018. Shortly before the 2012 presidential elections, the term of the presidential office in Russia was extended from four to six years.

In 2008, Putin’s close friend Dmitry Medvedev (now deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council) was elected president of Russia. Medvedev appointed Putin as the Prime Minister of Russia. Putin was the Prime Minister for four years during Medvedev’s entire presidential term.

In 2020, the amendments to the Russian Constitution were adopted, allowing Putin to run for president in the 2024 and 2030 presidential elections.
